Have you been missing festivals? This September long weekend, ScotFestBC is back – so grab your kilt and join in the fun at Coquitlam’s Lafarge Lake.

Highland GamesThis is the B.C. Highland Games’ first live, in-person event since 2019, and it’s going to be worth the wait. There will be piping, dancing and drumming, not to mention a haggis hunt, kids’ activities and a whisky school for the 19+ crowd.

Take part in cultural workshops, kick back in the beer garden or stroll through the many food and merchandise vendors while listening to live Celtic music. At the Heavy Events, watch as competitors throw stones and hammers in events that take inspiration from every day life. Shop at Poirier Street Farmers Market

Grab your tote bag and get ready to shop. This much-loved market is open every Sunday until October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering a wide selection of local produce, baked goods, prepared foods and one-of-a-kind artisan crafts. Stock up on everything you need for an end-of-summer dinner while being entertained by local musicians. Check it out at 575 Poirier Street, near Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex and the Coquitlam Public Library, with ample parking and bike racks available. This open-air shopping experience is operating under COVID-19 protocols.

Go for a Ride

Did you know Coquitlam has more than 100 km of bikeable trails, paths and greenways to explore? Whether you’re looking for family rides or high-energy technical rides, there’s something for everyone.

For easy, scenic rides, Mundy Park is home to 16 km of trails meandering around the lush, forested park with two picturesque lakes. Other flat options for all abilities include the Coquitlam River Trail network, DeBoville Slough and Colony Farm Regional Park.

This year, the Eagle Ridge (2689 Guildford Way) and Spani outdoor pools (655 Hillcrest St.) will remain open until Oct. 3. Although pre-registration is no longer required, they do have limited capacities, so call ahead to check wait times.

Try Ninja Tag 

Unleash your inner ninja! Run, jump and fly through Canada’s first ninja tag arena – a giant rumpus room for the adventurous (you must be at least 5 feet tall to enter). Ninja Tag takes cues from game shows like American Ninja Warrior and Wipeout, testing contestants with gruelling sets of physical challenges such as swaying beams and giant rolling balls.

Knock Down Some Bowling Pins

Zone Bowling Centre is modern bowling at its best, with five and 10-pin lanes, pop-up bumpers for younger players and automatic scorekeeping. You’ll also find on-site food options so you can make a day of it.

Visit an Art Exhibition

Place: A Nomadic Gallery in British Columbia features the work of five B.C.-based Francophone artists. Their works address identity and relationship to territory, and question the multiple complex relationships relating to the ideas of place, displacement and belonging. It’s on display at Evergreen Cultural Centre from Sept. 2 to Nov. 7, 2021.

See the New Exhibits at Place des Arts

Three new exhibits will be opening Sept. 3 at Place des Arts, and running until Nov. 4. This includes Clay For You: Doochi (traditional Korean ceramics), Creative Connections (various mediums by SD43 Teachers), and Sovereign Elevations (acrylics, inks and sculptures by Kiranjot Kaur). The opening reception will be held on Sept. 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Summer Concert Series

With a sound that blends funky beats with rock, blues, pop, grunge, jazz and other eclectic influences from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Queen and RAGE, Raincity will close out this year’s Summer Concert Series on Friday, Sept. 3 with a virtual performance at 5 p.m. Tune in to the premiere on Facebook, YouTube and the City website through to Sept. 17.
